Currently, there is a lot of volcanic activity happening, and a volcano in Iceland is about to erupt. Specifically around the town of Grindavik on the Reykjanes peninsula. The magma rising quickly causing hundreds of thousands of Earthquakes over the past week.
Isn´t that close to the Blue Lagoon?
Subsequently, the iconic Blue Lagoon, which neighbours the town has been closed for a few days now as a precaution. The town of Grindavik itself was evacuated on Friday due to the increase in magnitude of the earthquakes resulting in damage to infrastructure and cracks forming throughout the town.
What will happen?
The government has issued a statement that the likelihood of an eruption is high and has declared an emergency situation. The magma dike the scientists are observing spans 15km. Running close the the Blue Lagoon and power station and along the top of the town of Grindavik.
Experts believe the best-case scenario to save the infrastructure is for magma to surface at the south of the dyke. This part is under the sea. The infrastructure in the area at risk is Blue Lagoon, Power station, and the town of Grindavik.
However, an eruption of magma under seawater can be very explosive. As the seawater heats fast the magma cools rapidly causing blasts.
Is it safe to travel?
The scientists and government therfore believe it is safe to travel to Iceland as only a small area is affected. Please keep us up to date while you travel by following the latest safety advice from Safe Travel Iceland. We will write another post when the eruption has started and the picture is clearer.
