The Origins 2020
The Grumpy Whale was born in 2020 in Reykjavík, Iceland with a little cup of hot chocolate and a lot of ambition. Our founder Becca is an adventure guide specialising in scuba diving, so knows the value of a good hot chocolate to get you warmed up after those incredible cold adventures.
Why The Grumpy Whale? How we got our name.
Our name comes from the Icelandic folklore of Rauðhöfði a mischievous readheaded whale from Hvalfjörður. Read more about why our whale is so grumpy here.
The Shop: 2021
In 2021 we expanded and opened our Adventure gift store in downtown Reykjavík on Skólavörðustígur ‘the rainbow street’.
Expanding Behind the Scenes: 2022
We took a little break in 2022 and said goodbye to our shop in Reykjavík as our family expanded behind the scenes and we welcomed our newest team member to the world. We moved our shop to Bitra Guesthouse in Selfoss,
The Book: 2023
We returned in 2023 publishing a children’s book: The Grumpy Whale promoting environmentalism and friendship. Inspired by our origin story and Icelandic nature. Written and illustrated by our founder Becca. Get your copy here.
We Will Take You There: 2024
In 2024 we received our day tour license from the Icelandic Tourist Board. Taking our tour guide, responsible tourism, and Iceland experience and knowledge we want to take you to our favourite places for the cosiest and best adventures all around Iceland.
What will 2025 bring?
We aim to expand our tours to provide the best guiding experience in Iceland, bring you back the best hot chocolate and hopefully reopen our gift shop and bring you our hot chocolate bar!
