Arriving in Djúpivogur you can instantly relax and slow down – quite literally you are forced to as the speed limits in the town are lower than anywhere else in Iceland. We recommend you take every opportunity in your visit to soak in the rhythm of the town that prides itself on slow living. Nestled along the east fjords, it’s not a place you rush through. It’s a place that asks you to pause, breathe, and really look around. Here’s how we would recommend you spend one unforgettable day in this little harbor town.
Morning: Harbor Views and Coffee in a historic merchant house
We recommend to start your day by walking and getting ready slowly to set your town for the day in line with the town. When you are ready stroll down to the harbor, where the fishing boats are gathered. Take a deep breath of the crisp, tinged with salt and seaweed, and gaze at the mountains rising up like guardians on the horizon (most likely the will be mist creating a cosy atmosphere). Make your fist stop the Café Langabúð, housed in Djúpivogur’s oldest building. A red wooden merchants warehouse and trading post dating back to the 18th century. Have a leisurely breakfast enjoying a coffee and a local pastry or Icelandic pancakes. We recommend trying a Kleinur – an Icelandic twisted doughnut.
Midday: Art Among the Elements
After breakfast, wander over to one of Djúpivogur’s most famous landmarks: Eggin í Gleðivík or the Eggs of Merry Bay in English. On the shore find, 34 large granite eggs line the bay, each representing a different nesting bird species found in town. They are placed on concrete blocks that were left behind from infrastructure built for a herring quota that never came. We recommend you linger, just listening to the waves on one of the benches along the shoreline or stroll behind the eggs along a path to the orange lighthouse.

For lunch, head back to main harbour to Hafið Bistro for fish and chips.
Afternoon: Exploring Nature’s Quiet Corners
In the afternoon, I take a short hike outside of town. Djúpivogur is surrounded by wetlands and birdlife, and in the summer months, the area is alive with sounds and colors. If you’re lucky, you might spot reindeer wandering in from the mountains. Head further past the wetlands and find a secluded black sand beach.
Back in town, I browsed a small gallery showcasing local crafts and artwork. It struck me how creativity here feels deeply connected to the land and sea, not just as inspiration, but as a way of life.
Evening: Slowing Down with the Sunset
As the day wound down, return back to the harbor to watch the sun sink behind the mountains. Watch the water turns pink and gold, as the town grows quiet.
For dinner try local lamb at Hótel Framtíð another historic building in the town.
A peaceful day surrounded by nature
Spending a day in Djúpivogur gives you time to relax. There are no grand lists of must-sees, no frantic must dos. Instead, the town offers moments: harbour mornings, art by the sea, great local food and being immersed in nature.
Djúpivogur isn’t just a stop along the east fjords, it’s a destination in itself. One day here is enough to understand that sometimes the greatest travel experiences come not from doing more, but from doing less.
