Scuba Diving and Snorkelling in Iceland

Iceland is a land of fire and ice, with its unique geology and abundant marine life making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkelling.

Isn’t it cold?

Icelandic waters range from below freezing with diving below the ice to above 12 degrees C in the summer. Don’t worry though you will stay warm by wearing a drysuit with a thick underlayer, thermals and a thick wetsuit hood and mittens.

Snorkelling

Snorkelling is a great way to explore the underwater world around Iceland, as it requires minimal equipment and is suitable for all skill levels. The Silfra fissure in Thingvellir National Park is one of the most popular snorkelling destinations in Iceland, offering a chance to swim between two tectonic plates in water that is some of the clearest in the world. Other popular snorkelling sites include the geothermal vents at Kleifarvatn Lake and the underwater hot springs at Reykjanes Peninsula.

Scuba Diving

For those who are more experienced and want to explore the depths of Iceland’s waters, scuba diving is an incredible experience. The underwater landscape around Iceland is as varied as the country’s above-water terrain, with lava formations, shipwrecks, and even geothermal chimneys to explore. Divers can encounter a variety of marine life, including dolphins, seals, and even whales if you’re very lucky.

If you are diving and want to bring your own gear please make sure it is serviced and Rated for cold water diving. All dive centers in Iceland use DIN cylinders.
