What to Do on a Wintery Day in Reykjavík

Today is chilly, very windy with lots of snow falling. This make travelling outside the city difficult if you don’t have the right vehicle. On days like this we often get people coming into the store who have changed their plans slightly and are looking for something to do around the city. We have compiled this list of what to do in bad weather in Reykjavík, so you can read it from the comfort of your hotel room or hostel and plan a little before you venture into the storm.

Go to the pool

Did you know there are 17 public pools in Reykjavík and they all have hot tubs? This is a perfect one to do as the locals do and go and spend the day soaking in the natural hot water meeting friends, gossiping and talking politics. Find out more here.

Watch a movie

In the centre of Reykjavík is Cinema Paradis, which shows arts and international cinema or you could head to one blockbuster cinemas, find all the information here. Most film are in English with Icelandic subtitles if the the films title is in English.

Visit Perlan

The Pearl of Reykjavík is a dome that sits looking over the city and contains a museum of Icelandic natural wonders, a viewing platform and cafe.

Eat your way through the day

Start off at Sandholt or Brauð bakery to get a cinnamon roll. Then head soup in a roll at Svartikaffi. To setting your afternoon hunger grab a iconic Icelandic hot dog. For dinner as obviously you’ll be very hungry why not head to Sæbarron for some local lobster soup.

Huddle up in cafes

Grab a coffee like the local artists and write poetry about the dramatic weather.

Explore museums

Reykjavík is home to several excellent museums, including the National Museum of Iceland, the Reykjavík Art Museum, and the Icelandic Phallological Museum (yes, you read that right). These museums offer a glimpse into Iceland’s history, art, and culture.

The lava show will teach you all about Icelands volcanoes and you’ll be able to see some real lava flow they cook up in their furnace. while your in the old harbour area you can visit the whales of Iceland exhibition and Flyover Iceland to get a immersive experience view of the whole country.

Get Icecream

Grab yourself an Ice cream at Valdis because Icelanders love nothing more than ice cream in a storm or head to Kaffi Loki for Rye bread ice cream- delicious!

Take a stroll through the city

Reykjavík is a pedestrian-friendly city, and walking through its streets and alleys is a great way to experience its charm and character. Many of the city’s buildings are painted in bright colors, adding to the city’s whimsical feel.
